Vacation Rental Marketing – The Ultimate Blogging Guide

Vacation Rental Marketing - The Ultimate Blogging Guide

An Overview

Introduction.

We thought that we would fill in some of the gaps regarding blogging and your vacation rental marketing campaign. Various experts across the industry come up with the odd paragraph that says that vacation rental owners should build and maintain a blog in order to drive traffic to their website but don’t really go into any real detail regarding what to blog about, when to blog, how long these blog posts should be or any other detail for that matter.

So to address this issue we thought that we would write a definate guide to help owners get a good feel for what works and how to approach this subject.

This page is just a headline list so that you can get an overall feel for the subject. Have a read through the bullet points then click through on each subject for more detail once you understand the overall concept.

Vacation Rental Marketing - The Ultimate Blogging Guide - Question

1. What is blogging?

So you’ve heard the term “blog” and you want to know what blogs are all about. Well you’ve come to the right place.
Blogging is just the creation of informative articles, media content or posts, that are published on a regular basis. These posts are more interesting than the property portions of your site and they tempt people to visit your site itself.
The overall idea here is to keep our sites fresh with regular updates by the addition of interesting information.

2. As a vacation rental owner why do I need to start blogging?

You can look at blogging as the ‘live’ aspect of your marketing efforts. Think of the property portion of your website as the ‘static’ element of your site. Once you have created the property pages, uploaded your images, written your copy and published your rates there isn’t much to do regarding your site.

This static element just sits there and that in itself doesn’t drive traffic to your site so you need to create regular fresh content in order to attract interest and visitors to your site.

3. When should I be blogging?

The best answer to this question is”consistantly”.
Whatever you do you need to be publishing your articles on a regular basis. It’s no good posting this coming Wednesday, then on Friday, then miss two weeks and post an article on the following Monday. People like to know when you will be posting.
Work out a posting schedule (more on this later) that suits you and STICK TO IT.

4. What should I be blogging about?

As a general rule it’s easier to write about things that you know about than things that you don’t.
When it comes to marketing your vacation rental it’s easier (and more interesting to readers) to write about your location.
In fact forget about the term ‘blogging’ and think of this solely as ‘DESTINATION MARKETING’.
Potential guests don’t know as much about your location as you do so by sharing your local knowledge you increase the number of reasons people would want to visit.

5. How long should these blog posts be?

To some degree this is the $64,000 question. In the past the answer was ‘the longer the better’ but as VR owners we don’t necessarily have the time or the inclination to be creating lots of 1,000 word articles.
More to the point busy potential guests don’t really have the time to be reading long, detailed posts especially as many will come across our content on mobile devices when they are on the move.
My advice is that it’s better to write 5 short articles than 1 long article.
Those posts are also 5 times more likely to be found and read than just one, longer, post and it’s easier to write 5 short articles.

6. How do I attract readers?

It’s one thing writing articles and it’s quite another getting people to find and read them. In fact creating posts is the easy part as you will need to work hard to serve up your offerings in as many places as possible (just posting to your site will not attract readers).
It’s all about getting noticed and the easiest way to get noticed is to appear in as many places as possible.

As we said earlier, one of the best ways to attract readers is to post on a regular basis and then syndicate these posts across as many places as possible. You need to create as many footprints as possible. The more you leave the more chance someone has of finding them.

7. How do I attract even more readers?

You need to make it easy for your new and existing readers to share your posts. Word of mouth is the most powerful form of marketing and we are living in a social sharing era. Make sure that people can email, post to their Facebook stream or other social media profiles at the click of a button.

8. How do I retain readers?

There are a number of ways to retain readers and build a following. Firstly your posts need to be well written, informative and entertaining. No one is going to read a dull article and then sign up to read more dull articles.
So once you ‘find your voice’ you need to make it easy for avid readers to stay on your site and read more articles of a similar nature.
