25 Top Vacation Rental Listings Companies

As we have said in various posts across this site there are a host of vacation rental listings companies in the marketplace today.

So we thought that we would list some of the major players just in a quick reference form with links so you can drill down for further information.

As always we would love to hear your thoughts as to the pros and cons of the companies listed and any other vacation rental companies that you have been using.

Airbnb
1. Airbnb

Major player best known for home share but also has a big presence in the ‘traditional’ vacation rental market. Huge. Present in every country in the world bar 2 or 3.
Charges owners between 3 % and 8% commission depending on the cancellation fee (payment options). Charges guests  a fee too.
Owners review guests as well as the usual guest reviews that you see on most sites.

Still showing amazing growth.
Pretty much the biggest player in the game right now.

Thank you Alan. It is a useful list, whether one actually goes with any of them or not – it is always useful to look at sites. For the last 6 years I have been with Owners Direct (whom I now hate and most of my friends in Normandy feel the same, Abritel (OD’s partner in France), who so far seem OK but I am not sure how the Expedia takeover will affect them, and Vakationhuis in Holland, who bring me a lot of Dutch customers but whose calendar is not userfriendly. Since September this year I have joined Airbnb and Brittany ferries’ site. I have already had a lot of bookings with Airbnb, mostly weekenders, which is great, though I do think that they are a bit like Trip Advisor clients who feel that it is cool to find something wrong and they pull your place apart trying to find dust and problems. Of course they never say anything to your face, but I even got criticised by one client who said that the kitchen was too well equipped for a holiday house! However, I am learning from the experience, making some changes and the last clients have been very happy.

I love renting, meet some lovely people including those who come back, and enjoy sharing my experiences of this lovely area. The only glitch is the advertising and marketing, And I do not think I have yet found the ideal combination to attract the best customers.

      Hi Jenny,

I’m glad that you found it useful.
The listing sites are just too top heavy now. The fact that there are so many properties to choose from is only going to get worse so individual property exposure will suffer more and more.

That said, smaller, local and niche sites should do better. Are you pet friendly? It may pay to try them if you are.
You can see a few pet friendly sites and all sorts of links here http://rentmoreweeks.com/2013/01/30/vacation-rentals-pets-welcome-more-free-websites/ Just an idea.

We like Airbnb and have had great guests staying with us. We haven’t had a single problem.

If you are looking for an alternative way of marketing you may be interested in watching part of my keynote session at this years vacation rental world summit. In it I talk to owners that I’m working with and the outstanding results that they are getting.
